access information

At Mortal Fools, we want everyone to feel welcome at our programmes and performances. We’re committed to making the ways in which we work as accessible and inclusive as possible.

We have an office space in Ashington, and work at different venues for the sessions that we deliver. We collaborate closely with each space to ensure accessibility is considered from the start, always sharing clear access information and responding to the needs of our participants, partners and audiences.

Get in touch with us

If you have any questions about accessibility or would like to discuss your access needs in advance of attending any Mortal Fools session, please get in touch.

We’re happy to provide information in different formats.

Visiting our office

We work at Wansbeck Workspace, Rotary Parkway, Ashington, NE63 5QZ.

What3Words: ///pumpkin.carry.nightfall

We don’t host public events in our offices, but if you’re visiting us for a meeting, here’s what to expect.

The opening hours of the office are 9am – 5pm.

Sensory Key: Our office is set in an industrial estate, just off a main road. Whilst infrequent, you may hear traffic and movement of large vehicles and construction.

Navigating the building: Our office is on the ground floor, with ramp access. The main reception has two entrances at the front and back of the building, either will lead you directly to reception area. The doors do not open automatically. If you require assistance, there is an external intercom located on the left-hand side of the door. This is connected to reception if you require assistance.

On arrival, speak to reception staff if you require direction. We can also meet you in reception, by prior arrangement.

Toilets: There are gendered toilets and one gender neutral, accessible toilet located next to reception and our office.

Parking: On-site parking is available, including blue badge spaces. Guests should register their numberplate in reception upon arrival.

Public transport

We encourage visitors to take public transport where possible when visiting us.

Rail: Our office is a ten-minute walk from Ashington railway station, which has a direct connection to Newcastle city centre.

Bus: The X22 service between Newcastle and Ashington stops a short distance from our office on Rotary Parkway.

Please let us know if you have any specific access needs ahead of your visit.

Access at our sessions

We want everyone to have a positive experience in our sessions, and endeavour to make our activities as inclusive as possible. Some of the ways we do that are:
  • Mortal Fools staff receive training on best practices for working with a variety of access needs
  • Providing information about session activities and spaces in advance
  • Providing clear methods of communication to discuss any access needs before sessions
  • Working inclusively, meaning that our sessions cater to people a wide range of people and are designed for people to be able to access activities in different ways

Our work often involves working with large groups of children, young people and their families. Mortal Fools staff are trained professionals in working with a variety of people and access needs.

Community events

For our public facing events, such as Hirst Fest or Roots, all the events team are briefed on accessible and inclusive practice to make your experience run as smoothly as possible.

Where possible, we allocate breakout spaces for visitors who need a calm, low-stimulus environment.

Programmes: Youth Theatre, Ensemble, HAF Sessions

When you enrol yourself or your young person onto these sessions, we ask that you provide access requirement to ensure we can meet them.

Our Mortal Fools Youth Theatre access guide provides a more detailed guide to attending a young person’s session.

If you have a question about access at an upcoming session, please ask the team at [email protected].

For performances and online projects

Whether it’s show time or on social media, we want to provide live performances and digital content that all audiences can enjoy.

We aim to:
  • work with venues that share our values of access and inclusion.
  • provide performances that are relaxed and/or BSL interpreted.
    • What do we mean by relaxed? A performance where you are welcome to come and go as you please and is stim-friendly.
    • What do we mean by BSL interpreted? BSL means British Sign Language. A person will be stood on the stage to one side and use British Sign Language to interpret the language in the performance for audience members who use British Sign Language.
  • offer free Companion Tickets.
  • make our online content accessible through captions, transcripts and   alternative text.
  • When we share details of a performance, workshop or community event, we will include access information, both online and in print. Where possible, we will also publish a visual story. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please do get in touch.

Your feedback

We don’t get everything right and we’re keen to keep learning. If you’ve experienced access barriers or have suggestions about how we can improve, we’d love to hear from you.
