our work in 2025

Brainstorm (Spring 2025)

Ensemble Young Company toured an honest, funny and thought-provoking theatre show diving into the messy mechanics of the teenager brain. Using a script by Ned Glasier, Emily Lim and Company Three, developed in collaboration with neuroscientists and supplemented with new material from Ensemble, the show toured three venues across the north east.

For more information about Brainstorm, check out the event page.

Watch This Space (March - July 2025)

Over the summer term, our Youth Theatre groups explored the theme of change; the changes they make, the changes that are made for them, and the changes they want to see in the future.

All four of our Youth Theatre groups - from Stage One through to Ensemble - contributed to two brilliant live events, presenting original performances to the community.

Light Up (Autumn 2024 - Spring 2025)

For this project, we challenged our youth theatre to explore the ways in which light illuminates the beauty in the world around us, influences our mood and perspective and in the absence of light, what mystery and magic may exist.

In addition to exploring the concept of light, our groups worked with our Youth Theatre Practitioners and Production Staff to experiment with theatre lighting as a production tool to create captivating performances, bringing different characters, environments and memories to life.

Light Up engaged with 71 young people, who delivered two brilliant live events for their community as well as building skills, confidence and friendships together.

Ensemble Presents... (May - August 2025)

Over the summer, our Ensemble Young Company co-created two short films tackling some of the barriers young people face today: anxiety, and their relationships with the adult world.

You can watch both films and find out more on the project page.

Mortal Fools x Newcastle Carers

Across the year, we worked with Newcastle Carers on a collaborative creative intervention project, empowering young adult carers to engage with the arts and creativity; from filmmaking and music, to designing interactive, immersive experiences.

The project culminated in co-creating Imagine a World..., an exciting showcase of creative work attended by family members, sector professionals and local MPs.

Hirst: Together Works (January - March 2025)

This community engagement project brough together individuals from across the Hirst area of Ashington; fostering a sense of unity and creativity while contributing to the ongoing regeneration efforts in the area in small yet impactful ways.

In collaboration with a broad network of local partners, a programme of community activities and events were hosted, reflecting on the experiences of local people and what living in the area means to them.

Holiday Action Fund sessions (Summer 2025)

We worked in partnership with Full Circle Food Project and Ashington Family Hub to deliver three days of ‘Creativity Unleashed’ workshops as part of Northumberland Summer Holiday Provision.

These creative workshops engaged 37 young people aged 7-12, providing opportunities to explore drama games and creative activities, and enjoy a nutritious lunch. Each workshop had a different theme, and included a wide range of activities, including acting, animation, drawing and zine making. The activities developed the participants' well-being and confidence, and helped them get to know each other and make new friends.

Hirst Festival (December 2025)

A free mini festival for children, young people, families and the community, full of fun, creativity and festive spirit. There were creative activities, a pop-up cinema, a silent disco, a light installation and loads of opportunities to come together and have fun. We were delighted to welcome 1,593 to the inaugural Hirst Festival, with over 1,000 attendees joining Mortal Fools programming.
