‘Home’ isn’t always a place, is it?
It’s being surrounded by the familiar - the sounds and the smells.
It’s the memories - a feeling of comfort and connection.
It’s the people - past, present, and future.
Home can be wherever and whatever you make it; it just has to feel like home.

Taking inspiration from Northumberland author and illustrator Charlie Mackesy’s beautiful book, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, Mortal Fools’ Youth Theatre worked together across Spring/Summer 2022 to create 5 interactive, immersive performances.
Our members invited our Mortal Fools community to a housewarming party like no other - and nearly 200 of you joined us!
Attendees came together as party guests for an hour of joy, celebration, hope, party bags, the Macarena, and (of course) cake.
Across these 5 connected performances, Come On In enabled our audiences to delve into the imaginations of young people from all over the North East, as they shared what ‘home’ meant to them and explored what it meant to their audience. These energising, thoughtful performance pieces - all connected through the character of Jess - were brought to life with audio spoken word and soundscape enjoyed through silent disco headphones, live performance, and lighting.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK“Great to see children being natural and themselves, and expressing themselves!” “It was so moving to see young people expressing themselves so eloquently about an issue that affects them so deeply. They are clearly looked after with real care at Mortal Fools. It was very clear, that they all felt safe.” “Fantastic show! Confident, expressive and meaningful. A*.” “I enjoyed the fact it was interactive; you could tell everyone was having fun. It was a great show! Can’t wait to see what’s next.“ “Thank you SO MUCH! ALL THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE! I really enjoyed myself and laughed! Please do it again!” “I loved it. It was amazing.” “Excellent! Joyful and uplifting.” “Great performance! Lots of energy and friendship.” |
POST-SHOW CONTENTRESOURCE PACK
This resource pack is designed to complement our Come On In project. It is here to help anyone working with young people - from theatre practitioners and youth workers, to educators, carers and parents - to support your young people to explore the theme of home. PLAYLIST
Our Mortal Fools Youth Theatre members have pulled together a Come On In playlist, to help you keep the party vibes alive at home! These song choices formed the soundtrack to our rehearsal rooms. SOUNDSCAPE
Enjoy the animated version of the spoken word soundscape that closed the live performance event in 2022. Animated by professional animator Lily Kroese! “The use of headphones was just so exciting for my 8 year old - she loved that element and they really helped her to focus and engage. The music was excellent, and the design was so clever.” “My daughter has Autism and SPD. The explanations at the beginning of the show and the options to use the headset were fantastic.” “It was relevant, interesting, innovative and made by young people; really refreshing theatre.” “Brilliant Production! Loved the imagination and audience participation!” |
A massive thank you to our Come On In funders, and YMCA Northumberland for their support in-kind.
